Ceiling Fan Size Chart and Room Guide

Fan size is the first specification most buyers settle, and the easiest to get wrong. This guide sets out the widely published room-area to blade-span reference, how to read it, and what it does not tell you.

The chart below is general reference guidance from an external source. It is not a performance claim for any DL Lighting model. Our catalogue publishes no airflow or coverage data, so we do not state that a specific model covers a specific room area — the right size for a project is confirmed with the space dimensions.

General reference: room floor area and typical blade span
Room floor areaTypical blade span
Up to 75 sq ft29" to 36"
76 to 144 sq ft36" to 42"
145 to 225 sq ft44"
226 to 400 sq ft50" to 54"

Published reference guidance, reproduced for orientation. Convert to metric if your market works in metres: 75 sq ft is about 7 m², 144 sq ft about 13.4 m², 225 sq ft about 21 m², and 400 sq ft about 37 m².

Figures from external sources are general reference only. They are not a performance claim for any DL Lighting model: our catalogue does not publish airflow or coverage data, so a model must not be presented as covering a given room area.

Comparison

How to use the chart

Read the chart as a starting point for a conversation, not as a selection decision. Three questions decide whether it holds for your project.

1

Does room area alone decide the size?

Buyer guidance

No. Floor area gives you a starting span, then ceiling height, the number of fans, and the layout of the room change it.

  • A room at the top of a band may sit better in the next one, depending on ceiling height and how open the space is.
  • Two smaller fans sometimes suit a long or divided room better than one large fan.
  • Confirm the span against the actual space rather than picking by room name.
2

What else changes the answer?

External reference

Ceiling height and mounting format affect where the blades sit, and air movement depends on more than any single factor.

  • Air movement is not determined by one factor alone: motor design and speed, and blade design, material, number and length all bear on it.
  • That is why two fans of the same span are not interchangeable on performance, and why span should not be read as an airflow figure.
  • Our own catalogue does not publish airflow for any model, so performance remains something to confirm with us per project.

3

Is the chart a specification?

External reference

No. It is a general reference published for consumers and buyers, not a statement about what any particular fan will do.

  • The chart correlates room floor area with a typical blade span range. It says nothing about a given model.
  • Use it to shortlist a diameter, then confirm the model against the project with us.
  • Where a project has a specification or a bill of quantities, send it and we will work to that instead.

Checklist

What to confirm before you order

  • Floor area of the space, in the unit your market uses.
  • Ceiling height, and the height you want the blades to sit at.
  • Whether one fan will serve the room or whether the layout calls for more than one position.
  • Whether the ceiling is flat or sloped, which narrows the mounting formats available.
  • The diameter you have shortlisted, checked against the models that actually offer it.
  • Control method, light requirement and finish for the destination market.
  • Any local requirement or project specification that overrides general guidance.

Used for: The room-area to blade-span reference table on the size guide (up to 75 sq ft -> 29-36 in; 76-144 -> 36-42 in; 145-225 -> 44 in; 226-400 -> 50-54 in). Values supplied by the site owner from this page. Not used here for clearance distances or downrod lengths, which still need a citable source.

Buyer FAQ

Buyer questions

What size ceiling fan do I need for my room?
Start from the general reference chart above, which maps floor area to a typical blade span. Then check ceiling height, whether one position will serve the room, and whether the ceiling is flat. Send us the dimensions and we will confirm which diameters in the catalogue fit.
Does the chart tell me how much air a fan will move?
No. It correlates room area with blade span only. Air movement depends on motor design and speed as well as blade design, material, number and length, and we do not publish airflow figures for our models.
What if my room is larger than the chart covers?
Above the largest band, the usual approach is a larger-diameter fan or more than one fan position, depending on the shape of the space and the ceiling. Send us the dimensions and layout and we will confirm the options in our range, including the 66", 72" and 150" models.
Can you provide performance data for a specific model?
Not as a published figure. Airflow, RPM and coverage values are available on request for a project rather than listed against each model. Tell us the space and what you need to satisfy and we will confirm what can be provided.

Send us the room dimensions

Tell us the floor area, ceiling height, whether the ceiling is flat or sloped, and how many positions you are planning. We will confirm which diameters and mounting formats fit, and what else can be provided.
